Egypt Air and the Election
Eric began Friday's show with terrorism experts Adam Goodman and David Tafuri, who analyzed Thursday's crash of Egypt Air Flight 804 and its effect on the presidential campaign. "This election is not cerebral," Goodman theorized, "it's visceral. We want spontaneous reactions to what we're feeling, and I loved it when Donald Trump tweeted out, 'When are we going to be strong, smart, and vigilant?' You are not always going to like what Donald Trump says, but you're going to love what he does for America. The world is looking for America to stand up and be there again." But Tafuri contended that experience is more valuable than bluster. "Hillary Clinton has four years of experience as secretary of state, while Donald Trump is woefully unprepared to be commander-in-chief. He hasn't studied foreign policy, he doesn't care about foreign policy, and he has said some shockingly ignorant things. Yesterday he said this Egypt Air tragedy was terrorism, but there are no facts yet to suggest that." Referring to recent polls, Eric reminded Tafuri, "Most Americans believe Donald Trump would be tougher on Islamic terrorism than Hillary Clinton."
New Polling on Trustworthiness
Polls show that Americans have a conspicuous lack of trust in both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Eric discussed that trust gap with Democrat Jessica Tarlov and Republican Ashley Pratte. "Hillary Clinton's likeability is also haunting her," Pratte began, "but I think that in the general election people will vote based upon the economy and right now Donald Trump is leading on the economy. Her trustworthy numbers are plummeting and Donald Trump should stay on the Bill Clinton issue." Tarlov confidently predicted that Clinton's dismal numbers will improve when she is the official nominee. "A lot of this has to do with the fact that the primary is still going on. As long as there is a contrast with Bernie Sanders, it's going to look bad for her. Getting down in the ditches with Donald Trump would be a big mistake."
Trump's Scorched Earth Policy
Donald Trump seems very willing to go after Bill and Hillary Clinton with verbal guns blazing, even bringing up the charge that Bill Clinton raped a woman. But will that actually accrue to his benefit in the general election? Eric posed that question with Democrat Bernard Whitman and Republican Ned Ryun. "Regardless of what you think of Donald Trump," Ryun said, "it's refreshing to see a Republican on the attack and not making excuses. He has made it very clear that everything is on the table and that will be problematic for Hillary Clinton because she is not the best candidate. Trump will attack her from every angle and that will throw her off." But Whitman theorized that Clinton actually has many advantages if the campaign gets extremely nasty. "There is not a single thing that can be said about Hillary Clinton that hasn't been said before, none of it is new information. But every single day there's something new with Donald Trump. He is the gift that keeps on giving, his negatives are going to skyrocket."
Sanders Sticks Around
Many leading Democrats are now urging Bernie Sanders to call it quits, arguing that he is harming the party and helping Donald Trump. But Sanders says he'll stay in the fight until the final vote is cast. Eric discussed the chaotic situation with Democratic strategist and fervent Sanders supporter Harlan Hill. "I think the real candidate who hurts the Democrats is Hillary Clinton," Hill proclaimed. "This is a candidate with a 30-year record of lies, deceit, and fraud. She's a reprobate with ties to the last eight years that have been disastrous to the middle class." Hill tried to describe the loyalists who swoon over Bernie Sanders at his massive rallies. "Average Sanders supporters are not a democratic socialists, they're just fed up. Most of his supporters can't stand Hillary Clinton, who actually gives Ted Cruz a run for that 'Lucifer in the flesh' title. And if Bernie Sanders doesn't get the nomination, I'll support Donald Trump. "
No Spin Interview with Trump
Eric introduced some excerpts from Bill's recent interview with Donald Trump, during which the presumed Republican nominee defended his anti-abortion bona fides. "I have become pro-life and I will protect life by putting the right people on the Supreme Court. I'll put conservative judges on the court and there could be as many as five judges appointed over the next four years." Trump also elaborated on his escalating war of words with Senator Elizabeth Warren, a favorite among progressives. "She's a senator who has done nothing, she just talks. She has gotten nothing approved, she is not highly respected, and about a week ago she started tweeting violently about me. She sees polls showing that I'm going to beat Hillary and she wants to see the Democrats win. I finally hit her back very hard."
What Now, Trump Haters?
Finally, Eric spoke with conservative Tim Miller, a leader of the stop-Trump movement who remains opposed to the tycoon's candidacy. "We are no longer actively advertising," Miller began, "but we still are people with principles who say we will never vote for Donald Trump. The GOP elites are getting behind Trump and I get to be the principled outsider. If we're going to have an enemy in the White House, I'd rather it be an enemy I can oppose than an enemy of our own kind. Trump is not a principled conservative, he will be even worse than Clinton." Eric scolded Miller and his fellow anti-Trump Republicans for helping elect a liberal Democrat: "When are you guys going to realize that a 'no' vote for Trump is a vote for Hillary Clinton? You would rather lose the White House than win it with someone you don't like!"
