Jasmine Crockett has become bad for business, very bad. Other members of the Democratic Party know her toxicity has damaged their brand.
The trajectory of the Congresswoman from Texas has been fascinating to watch. Soon after being sworn in two years ago, Ms. Crockett decided that lobbing verbal bombs was her ticket to stardom. It worked beyond her wildest dreams. Through slander and slurs, Jasmine Crockett became a regular on CNN and MSNBC and even the Sunday chat shows. They wanted red meat, or blue meat in this case, and she never failed to deliver.
Most intriguing was Crockett’s personal transformation. The well-off daughter of a pastor who sent her to the finest private schools adopted an entirely different image. She became the bad girl, peppering her diatribes with slang and jive. Her star rose even faster.
But then Jasmine Crockett, like Icarus of Greek mythology, flew too close to the sun. Speaking to an LGBTQ advocacy group in Los Angeles, Crockett looked out at the sea of white liberals and knew she had them in the palm of her hand. She hesitated briefly before going ahead with the slur heard ‘round the world. Jasmine Crockett mocked Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who has been confined to a wheelchair for decades, as ‘Governor Hot Wheels.’
The crowd ate it up, but the backlash was fierce, and not just from the right. CNN’s Van Jones denounced her, as did other Democrats and even the ladies of The View. Crockett laughably claimed she was not referring to Gov. Abbott’s disability, but no one bought her lame excuse.
This reminds us of September 10, 2016, when Hillary Clinton was just two months away from winning the presidency. She was addressing an adoring crowd of donors in New York City and trotted out a line she had used once before. Mrs. Clinton, of course, described half of Trump voters as a ‘basket of deplorables.’ No one can say whether that comment cost HRC the presidency, but she probably regrets those three words more than anything in her life.
Jasmine Crockett is now feeling the same sting of regret. Sure, she’ll get some weekend spots on MSNBC, but her stardom has dimmed. In the case of Icarus, he died when his wax wings melted from the heat of the sun. Jasmine Crockett will survive, but her wings have been clipped.
