So, another day, another controversy. President Trump says he may order the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Cuba to house 30,000 undocumented migrants.

As you may know, GITMO, as it is called, was used as a prison for jihadists after the 9/11 attack.  The United States leased the base after the Spanish-American War in 1903, and we've controlled the area ever since.

In 2003, 680 accused terrorists were held there, a long way from the 30,000 number. Just 15 detainees remain.

Now, I've reported from GITMO twice, in 2002 and 2006, and it's no gulag. Isolated, yes.  But it's clean, the prisoner food is good, very nice ocean views.

However, nobody is signing up to go there.

And that's the point.  President Trump is scaring potential undocumented people. In just ten days, border intrusions are down more than 50 percent from the last weeks of Biden.

President Trump says he will only send criminals to the camp, not women or children. But, worldwide, the message is getting out: no more easy ride for the undocumented in America.
