There are multiple things wrong regarding the reaction to UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's murder in New York City, most notably how people have reacted online and in the media.
The first reaction from online observers is how "hot" Luigi Mangione is. America's obsession with killers has evolved into an internet beauty contest for people who commit horrible acts.
The second reaction is to ignore the initial horrible act and put sympathy on the killer because of the victim's profession. While insurance companies deserve scrutiny, and there is no doubt many of these companies have impacted people in awful ways, it's no excuse to justify murder.
Third, the person at McDonald's who reported Mangione is being labeled a snitch and a "rat" by keyboard warriors for calling authorities on the suspected killers. Is this bizarro world?
Finally, there is a lack of sympathy for Thompson's family. You can be right about insurance companies all you want. It wasn't right for Mangione to kill that man in the street and leave his wife and kids without a father. It's also not right for people to put any family through this type of reaction.
