To borrow from Dickens, these are the worst of times for American leftists. To begin with, the man they hate more than Lucifer is about to take up residence in the White House. But the left’s troubles run deeper than that.
The looniest of the loons have been roundly rejected by sensible citizens. Soros-funded, soft-on-crime prosecutors George Gascón and Chesa Boudin are gone, leaving chaos in their wake. Radical ‘Squad’ members Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush were ousted by their own Democratic constituents.
MSNBC, the left’s cable outfit of choice, has shed half its viewers and all its credibility, while NPR, the playground of elderly white women, may soon lose federal funding. Network news shows, almost exclusively run by men and women of the left, have seen their once-considerable influence collapse. Meanwhile, Mark Zuckerberg now declares that Facebook will treat conservatives and their ideas fairly, while once-censorious Twitter/X is run by Donald Trump’s BFF.
Because of the far left’s inordinate influence, the Democratic Party has been abandoned by much of America’s working class. And vice versa. The party is now the province of wealthy, educated folks who tend to sneer at anyone who doesn’t share their ideas about race, religion, guns, and everything else.
Even many Californians now realize that their lefty leaders are beyond inept. LA Mayor Karen Bass put diversity ahead of competence; Governor Gavin Newsom listened to enviro-nuts and put tiny fish ahead of sensible water policy. They are credibly accused of letting their skewed priorities add ideological fuel to the wildfires that have ravaged Southern California.
True, left-wingers are excellent at devising theories and slogans. Who can forget such gems as ‘defund the police?’ But sloganeering and governing are vastly different skills, and left-wing politicians have failed their cities, states, and nation. ‘Progressives’ are eternally eager to display their virtue, even as their policies lead directly to death and chaos.
So it’s accurate to say the left is on the ropes, taking body shots and getting pummeled. But don’t forget that Muhammad Ali was on the ropes fifty years ago during the opening rounds of ‘The Rumble in the Jungle’ in Zaire. We might ask George Foreman how that worked out.
Common sense is ascendant at the moment, but no one should get complacent. Leftists and their wretched ideas – unlike George Foreman – never get knocked out.
