"A report today says that people who live in and around Ferguson, Missouri are buying guns at a record rate. That's because a decision on the police shooting of Michael Brown is due soon and there could be more rioting. Liberal pundits continue to say that blacks are being mistreated by society in general, but especially by the police. They use phrases like white privilege, police racism, things like that. There is no question that African-Americans are struggling in our competitive country, but are we truly a racist nation? Or is there something else here? Enter commentator Ben Stein, who said this: 'The real problem with race in America is a very, very beaten-down, pathetic, self-defeating black underclass.' Because of history, America does owe blacks extra help. But Talking Points has said over and over that it is the collapse of the African-American family that has led to the economic chaos. 72% of all black babies are now born out of wedlock, the desertion rate for African-American men is astronomical. That is the truth, and that is why the poor black precincts continue to suffer. As everybody knows, poverty leads to crime, drug abuse, hopelessness. In Chicago, black gangs terrorize entire neighborhoods, essentially brutalizing their own people. President Obama has not paid much attention to the problem, although I think he grieves about it. But there is only so much the feds can do; cultural violence and chaos is a local problem. And to combat it, African-Americans should rise up and demand protection. But more importantly, condemn irresponsible behavior by their own."

Democrat Kirsten Powers and Republican Monica Crowley reacted to the Talking Points Memo and America's race dilemma. "What Ben Stein said," Powers asserted, "did not come off very well. Referring to black people as 'pathetic' and 'self-defeated' is not an accurate description, I don't think that's true and it sounds racist to me. And you always refuse to acknowledge that there is institutional racism in this country." Crowley described the problem in starkly political terms. "For decades the black community was largely conservative, they were church-going with solid traditional values. But after the civil rights movement the left got into that community and helped destroy it with government dependency. The left needs a permanent underclass because without it they're out of business." The Factor took issue with arguments put forth by both guests: "Every corporation in this country wants to hire educated black people and colleges are looking to provide aid and acceptance letters to African Americans. But I'm not buying the idea that the leftist promotion of welfare leads to bad personal behavior."

The Factor welcomed Hans von Spakovsky and asked the conservative attorney for the latest on the IRS scandal. "Lois Lerner was held in contempt of Congress seven months ago," von Spakovsky said, "but the Justice Department did absolutely nothing about it, they did not comply with federal law. Congress needs to go to court to enforce that contempt citation and they need to find out why the U.S. Attorney hasn't complied with federal law. Now that the Congress is going to be controlled by Republicans, they can add their weight to this investigation." The Factor concluded, "The only way we're going to find out what happened is if Lois Lerner is granted immunity."

Video has emerged showing ObamaCare architect Jonathan Gruber admitting that the law was promoted under false pretenses to fool "stupid" American voters. The Factor asked John Stossel to assess the deception. "They were selling this plan as 'free stuff' for everyone," Stossel said, "but the truth is that it's insurance. So if you're healthy you're going to pay in to cover the sick people. Gruber got paid $400,000, but didn't mention that he was being paid by the administration when he went on TV programs. We are conned every time we pass big bills that are going to 'fix' problems, this is consistent with the way government grows." The Factor added that President Obama was equally opaque: "The president went on television and said most Americans will pay less, but most Americans are not paying less."

General Daniel Bolger entered the No Spin Zone to discuss his new book "Why We Lost," which examines the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. "The sad part about Afghanistan," he lamented, "is that we didn't have to lose. We had it won in 2001 when we went in with a short and decisive operation and knocked out the Taliban. But we didn't have enough sense to pull out and turn it over to the locals. We'll leave a residual force in Afghanistan but it will be very small and it will be there only briefly. We had both wars won but then backed away from victories." The Factor countered that it's inaccurate to characterize both wars as losses: "I don't agree that the U.S. lost the wars, but I agree that we shouldn't have fought them the way they were fought."

In still another example of the violence that is endemic in public schools across the country, a Philadelphia student actually knocked out a 68-year-old teacher. Legal analysts Kimberly Guilfoyle and Lis Wiehl scrutinized the chaos. "They've been having problems in that school district in general," Guilfoyle said. "That's important because if there is a pattern of inappropriate conduct and you have to have a positive teaching environment. He was physically injured and he will be pressing criminal charges against the student, who has been suspended." Wiehl added that the teacher seems to have a strong case. "This is the third time something like this has happened. The teacher will pursue the criminal charges and then there will be a civil case. He will allege that the school district knew that teachers are being abused."

Charles Krauthammer opined on whether the new Republican Senate will finally be able to get to the truth about the IRS' targeting conservative groups. "I'm not confident," he said, "because the administration is very good at stonewalling and the media have no interest in this. The Senate should grant Lois Lerner immunity so that if she lies she's in big trouble." Krauthammer also took aim at ObamaCare designer Jonathan Gruber, who has admitted that the law was passed via subterfuge and deception. "What we're hearing now is true liberal arrogance," Dr. K declared. "They believe the voters are stupid and they believe they have to lead the masses to the promised land and they can only do it by deception. They lied about every aspect of this!"

A new book makes very dubious claims about Jesus, but the mainstream media is giving it lots of publicity. To set the record straight, there is absolutely, positively no evidence that Jesus was married or had children or siblings.

Bob Grant, Knoxville, TN: "Watters said 'Tucker Carlson, George Will and myself.' It should have been 'and me.' Apparently Trinity College doesn't teach proper grammar."
