Talking Points Memo
Paying for bad behavior
"Last November The Factor drove the O.J. Simpson book story, even though the parent company of the Fox News Channel was paying Simpson. I don't believe that would have happened at any network, but Fox News allowed me to drill Simpson right between the eyes, and the public outcry forced the cancellation of that ill-conceived project. Now we have a similar situation at a much lower level. NBC News apparently tried to buy access to Paris Hilton, and a published report says the price offered was a million bucks. Obviously, Hilton's offenses are insignificant compared to murder. But the bottom line is the same - rewarding bad behavior. Late this afternoon, NBC apparently backed out of the Hilton deal, realizing its image was at stake. We've been telling you that all standards have evaporated at NBC News, and that is true. And just where were the NBC news people themselves? What did they say? The silence is deafening, their credibility crumbling. At face value, Paris Hilton is insignificant. But as a display of what the culture and media have become in the United States, she's important. The justice system sent Paris Hilton, and so did NBC News. Which message do you believe is appropriate?"

Latest on the Davis disappearance
Guest: Geraldo Rivera

Geraldo Rivera joined The Factor with more on Jessie Davis, the 9-month pregnant woman who vanished in Ohio a week ago. Rivera rationalized why this case has captured the public's attention. "First, you have a sympathetic victim who was on the verge of giving birth. Then you have the fact that her 2-year old saw the whole thing and was not harmed. Then there's the boyfriend, a policeman with a checkered past. One of his paramours alleges that he was frequently violent to her." The Factor urged other young women to learn something from this situation. "People always get angry when I say this kind of thing, but there's a message here. You do not get involved with a chaotic person who had a lifelong pattern of irresponsible behavior with women. If you do get involved with that kind of person, anything can happen."

Legislating conservative talk radio?
Guest: Radio talk show host Michael Reagan

Senator James Inhofe claims he overheard Senators Hillary Clinton and Barbara Boxer talking about the need to regulate conservative talk radio. Although Clinton and Boxer say the conversation never took place, radio host Michael Reagan claimed many liberals would indeed like to silence talkers. "We know they want you off the air, Bill. And we know they want conservative talk radio off the air. So it's something that does concern us, and we believe this because there have been left-wingers in the past who have brought this to the forefront." The Factor pointed out that liberal radio has failed in the marketplace. "The far left in America is mad because right-wing commentators dominate talk radio. Air America went bankrupt and NPR, which is very left, doesn't have much impact. But the government is never going to legislate equal time, thanks to your dad Ronald Reagan, who said let the marketplace dictate."

Illegal alien kills 22-year-old girl
Guest: Heather Steffek

University of Tennessee athlete Joycelyn Gardiner was killed when drunken driver Victor Benitez smashed into her car - he is an illegal alien from Mexico with six prior convictions. The Factor elaborated on Benitez' criminal history. "He had four convictions in Houston, a sanctuary city where no attempt was made to find out his immigration status. Then he moved to Nashville, where he continued to commit crimes. Even after six convictions, Judge William Higgins sentenced Benitez to just seven days in jail for disorderly conduct." The Factor then spoke about the situation with Heather Steffek, whose parents were also killed by an illegal alien drunk driver who had four prior DUI convictions. "The similarities in the two cases are unreal," Steffek said. "Both men had prior arrest records and were released with little time served. At some point the federal government is going to have to take a serious look at these illegals and what they're doing to our citizens."

Prosecutor in LA under fire following Hilton handling
Guest: Doug McIntyre, KABC-AM

Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, who prosecuted Paris Hilton for drunk driving and probation violations, now has his own legal problems. Radio host Doug McIntyre laid out the case against the prosecutor. "It turns out Rocky Delgadillo's wife has a suspended license. They have no insurance, no license, they have unpaid parking tickets. And he's had his staff baby sitting and taking his kids to the museum. But he was the guy in front of the cameras yelling about letting Paris Hilton out. This is the chief law enforcement officer for Los Angeles!"

Week in Review Segment
Iraq and the American media
Guest: Fox News analyst Michelle Malkin

FNC's Michelle Malkin joined The Factor with her analysis of the past week. She began with the allegation that NBC News was prepared to shell out $1 million for an interview with Paris Hilton. "At last NBC's credibility has hit total rock bottom," Malkin pronounced. "This is a network that can't call itself an upstanding, holier-than-thou news organization." Malkin also commented on the revelation that American reporters donate nine times as frequently to liberal politicians and causes than conservative ones. "America's journalists overwhelmingly vote Democratic, so this was no surprise. But what's very interesting about this story is the lack of disclosure - not a single one of these journalists who donated money disclosed this information." The Factor singled out Randy Cohen, the so-called "ethicist" at the New York Times. "The Times does not allow reporters to donate. But their ethicist, who is a phony, gives money. He violated his own paper's policy!"

American TV icon of the week
Finally, The Factor welcomed TV Icon Tim Conway, who starred in two runaway hits. Conway joked about his first days on "McHale's Navy" in 1962. "I had never done anything in the business before. I knew nothing, and I was working with an Academy Award winner Ernest Borgnine. He said I was the dumbest guy in the business, which I did not argue with because I really believe I was." He later starred in "The Carol Burnett Show," one of the most beloved shows in TV history. "They were wonderful sketches. Things were invented on that show, you just took a shot." The Factor praised Conway as a TV Icon and "a very nice guy."
Factor Mail
Viewers sound off
Many of you sent e-mails about the report that NBC would pay Paris Hilton for an interview. Some excerpts:

Linda White Oliver, Dallas, TX: "I never agree with Bernie Goldberg but he was right on NBC paying Paris Hilton. How could they have sunk this low?"

Rosalie Marquez, Pueblo West, CO: "Bill, this is getting old! Why are you covering Paris Hilton?"

Other viewers commented on the Juneteenth festivities, which were marred by violence in at least three cities.

Kevin Werner, Austin, TX: "Bill, you are correct that most of the media ignored the Juneteenth violence. I live in Austin and didn't know a man was killed here until I heard it from the Factor."

Steve Grady, Atlanta, GA: "Three white guys allegedly raping a black woman at Duke is front page news for more than a year, yet the Juneteenth crimes are ignored. Do the math."

Marvin Mitchell, Aurora, CO: "The news media isn't ignoring the crimes because they love black people. They just ignore pretty much everything that happens in the inner cities."
