The United States has lost a great patriot. Senator Joseph Lieberman died Wednesday from complications after he fell in his Connecticut home. He was 82.
I wish all 100 US Senators would emulate Mr. Lieberman. A man of faith, courage, and honesty, he loved his country to the extent that he put it over his own self-interest. You may remember that the Senator campaigned for John McCain rather than Barrack Obama in 2008. He believed Mr. Obama was too liberal and inexperienced to run the country.
That angered the Democratic establishment, and Lieberman had to run for re-election in Connecticut as an independent.
He won.
Last month, the retired Senator appeared on the No Spin News and was his usual energetic self. We talked about Israel, as he loved the country and his Jewish faith. As always, he was straightforward and intelligent. One of my favorite guests over the decades.
To me, Senator Lieberman's defining moment came after he and Al Gore lost the election of 2000. Razor tight, the Supreme Court making the call for George W. Bush.
Both Lieberman and Gore could have trashed the result, thus creating more division and bitterness. They did not. They put their country above themselves.
A striking example of what public service should be.
Rest in peace, Joseph Lieberman.
