Anonymous sources are bad. They allow journalists to report agenda-driven stories and individuals to attack others while hiding under a dark cloak. The media makes millions of dollars peddling shadowy, unverifiable negative stories and it's not about to stop doing it.
We don't report things unless we can publicly source the material. You want to accuse Biden and Trump of stuff - put your name on it.
It is true, however, that some events cannot be publicly verified because those involved are too afraid of reprisals. Lives can be disrupted. Watergate is the best example of that.
So, sometimes, a responsible journalist must weave a "tale", putting forth information while not claiming infallibility. Such a scenario is now submitted for your consideration.
It is Friday, June 28, and leaders of the Democratic Party are panicking. President Biden has just come off the worst debate performance in modern times, and snap polls show a further deterioration of support. There is no amount of spin that can counter this.
Former President Barack Obama is taking calls. He does not say much, well understanding that any anti-Biden comments will likely be anonymously leaked to the press.
Very few human beings can get to Mr. Obama directly. CNN pundit David Axelrod can. Former Biden chief-of-staff Ron Klain has his cell number, as do a few major Democrat donors who are generously contributing to his presidential library in Chicago. If you want to speak to the former President, you have to go through his "people," as George Clooney did when seeking permission to put his name on an anti-Biden article solicited by The New York Times.
There is no disagreement about President Biden's status among powerful Dems: he is in danger of losing to Donald Trump. Thus, he must quit the race as soon as possible. Barack Obama despises Trump and will not allow a MAGA victory.
The New York Times feels the same way and immediately ramps up a whirlwind of "Joe must go" coverage that includes Clooney.
Nobody consults with Jill Biden.
That is a mistake.
The current White House chief-of-staff, Jeff Zients, is working 15 hour days trying to do damage control. It is not working. In addition to the Obama people, the Clinton wing of the Democratic Party has also concluded Biden will lose to Trump.
James Carville, a top Clinton confidant, stridently delivers that message on television. Liberal media pundits get the picture: Biden's base is disappearing.
But the President doesn't need a base to continue his campaign. He's got the delegates locked down.
First Lady Jill understands this. She told her husband immediately after the debate debacle that he did great. That is exactly what the shaky President wanted to hear.
Joe Biden is totally dependent on his wife. Often, he is disoriented in private. Access to him is limited to a few advisers and family members. Jill Biden is the gatekeeper and also must approve his public schedule.
President Biden will not get better. Right now, his situation is a standoff because of Jill's intransigence. But, soon, the President's position is likely to become untenable as he is having trouble functioning day-to-day.
Vice President Harris is quietly being prepped for the Democratic Convention in August. It is unclear if Jill Biden knows this.
The Rolling Stones once sang, "Time is on my side." You will not hear that song in the White House.
