AI will shape the future, and it might already be out of control.

China and the USA are in a race to harness artificial intelligence, but the competition is rigged.  The Chinese, as we saw with COVID, have no rules.  America will have to practice some restraint in its oversight of AI.  Human life means something here.  It doesn’t in China, Iran, Russia, and other places.

If AI becomes weaponized, a likely scenario, a cyber war could doom the planet.  We already have criminal hackers running wild.  Private FBI personnel files have been exposed; health care information guarded by the Australian government has been successfully hacked.  It doesn’t take AI to figure out that nuclear codes and high level war materials could soon be vulnerable to cyber theft.  That’s the real terminator.

While we wait for oversight action by Congress, the usual debate rages over government restrictions.  President Trump well understands that China is hell-bent in its pursuit of AI dominance.  No matter what we do here, the Chinese government will pursue AI power to its fullest extent.

But the President also realizes the economic benefits of the AI breakout. Enormous money.  AI companies stand to make trillions of dollars and don’t want inhibitions, generally speaking. Millions of American workers will benefit financially as the industry sells AI in the private sector. The U.S. job market will expand, salaries will rise.

In addition, medical research will explode, and many maladies are likely to be cured. Daily tasks will be done by voices you direct on computers.  However, we have few protections against miscreants who will use AI to commit crimes like extortion and theft.  

Also, you don’t have to be George Lucas to envision what would happen if the jihadists ever get access to AI weaponry.

In the face of all this, Congress does what it usually does: nothing.  Plenty of pandering and bickering.  This amuses the killers in Beijing.  They are busy figuring out how to maximize their power by developing AI.  Maybe they will ramp up the Wuhan lab for some experiments.

Congress needs to pass new laws with heavy penalties for companies and individuals who misuse AI. There should be a new law enforcement agency that exclusively tracks AI criminals both here and abroad.

Danger is coming; smart people know that. Time to put up some protections while not destroying the inevitable technology. Tough to do.

But we have been warned.
