I’m thinking back 42 years ago this week—1978—when the movie ‘Animal House’ was released and wound up being one of the most successful films of the year. But that movie could never be made today, in fact, the participants would be canceled, shamed, vilified, there may even be protests in Portland.
Here’s the back story: ‘Animal House’ is a satire of the fraternity system on college campuses, which still exists. It is racist, sexist, rude, crude, and almost every scene is inappropriate. It is also one of the funniest movies ever made, if you have a sense of humor.
The film features comic mad-man John Belushi—who would absolutely terrify many college students today.
Just the toga party scene alone would send many young people running for a safe space.
Animal House screenplay mocks just about everyone, including women and minorities.
At one point, Hollywood loved the film—today, not so much. There’s nothing ‘woke’ about Animal House, but it could evolve. I’d love to see a remake, maybe Stephen Colbert in the Belushi roll?
Hey, Netflix would take it!
