It was a bit disconcerting to see CNN's Chris Wallace grill actor Dennis Quaid about supporting Donald Trump. As you may know, Mr. Quaid plays President Reagan in a new movie and was promoting the film in conversation with Chris.
Now, I fully understand why Chris Wallace doesn't like Donald Trump. The former president has publicly disparaged him. But Mr. Quaid has nothing to do with that. The actor has a perfect right to support any politician, just as George Clooney and the liberal Hollywood crew do.
Mr. Wallace's line of questioning was that Reagan would not have approved of Trump. Possible but certainly not definitive. Dennis Quaid rightly pointed out that both Reagan and Trump campaigned on "America First."
I know Chris Wallace and he, like his father Mike, is a skilled interviewer. He knew putting Quaid on the spot was a way to pop Trump. I would not have done that.
Straightforward is the way to go. If you don't like Trump, just spell it out. You don't need to drag innocent bystanders into it.
Right?
Have a good weekend. New column Sunday morning.
