News from the holiday break
"The latest news is that Governor Bill Richardson is out as Barack Obama's Commerce Secretary, and there may be indictments because of 'pay-for-play' contracts doled out during his administration. We're hearing it's possible the governor himself may be indicted, just like Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich has been. Ever since the Democrats won big in November, there has been one scandal after another. In Minnesota, another embarrassment may be brewing. The Wall Street Journal is suggesting that the Democratic structure in that state may be cheating in the Coleman-Franken race and that a Franken victory will be 'tainted and undeserved.' So in the space of just three months since election day, two sitting governors and a Democratic state machine are all on the corruption watch. Of course, the liberal press is downplaying most of this - they'd rather concentrate on beating up on President Bush as he moves out of the White House. There's more to Bush-bashing than just hatred. The more bad stuff the press can lay on Mr. Bush, the more time President-elect Obama will have to sort things out."

How should Obama handle the Gaza violence?
The Factor asked FNC analyst Newt Gingrich how President Bush will be judged by history. "The number one fact about George W. Bush's presidency," Gingrich replied, "will be that he reacted aggressively and effectively against terrorism and he defended the American people in a way none of us would have predicted on 9/11. In the long run I suspect you will find a much more balanced judgment about the Bush administration." Gingrich also advised President-elect Obama to choose sides in Gaza. "Hamas declares unequivocally that it is committed to destroying Israel and it is happy to kill civilians. Israel responds as a civilized nation trying to minimize collateral damage. Barack Obama can say he is on the side of people who want to have peace without violence, and that as long as Hamas is determined to be violent he is supporting their destruction."

2009: Year of the scandal?
After Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich appointed Roland Burris to the Senate, Congressman Bobby Rush called any attempt to ban Burris a modern "lynching." The Factor welcomed FNC analyst Juan Williams, who criticized the Burris appointment. "This is such a cynical play by Blagojevich," Williams asserted. "He is using racial politics to divert attention from his own alleged corruption, and Bobby Rush should know better." Fox News' Mary Katharine Ham pointed to another Democratic scandal, the withdrawal of prospective Commerce Secretary Bill Richardson. "I read one report," Ham said, "that referred to the Obama transition's 'exceedingly smooth public face.' They've got a smooth face like a high school marching band without a dermatologist. This is ridiculous!" The Factor shed no tears over Richardson's fall from grace. "We treated Richardson very well on the Fox News Channel, and then when the debates came along he boycotted Fox News. We think he's a weasel, and we watched as he turned on his friend Hillary Clinton. I have no respect for the governor."

Obama's plan to kick-start the economy
Barack Obama's plan to spend hundreds of billions of dollars in bailouts and stimulus led conservative Rev. Pat Robertson to complain of imminent socialism. Culture Warriors Margaret Hoover and Monica Crowley weighed in on that radical forecast. "Mr. Robertson has not had a great track record on predictions," Hoover began. "A lot of Republicans are using hyperbole when they're talking about 'socialism.' We are not going toward a socialist society, the underpinnings of our society are individualism and entrepreneurial freedom." But Crowley expressed genuine concern about creeping socialism. "When you have an economic meltdown, it gives politicians the pretext to extend government intervention. I do think Robertson is right, there is massive economic government intervention that steps on the toes of the free market."

Controversy surrounds death of Jett Travolta
John Travolta's 16-year-old son Jett, who had a history of seizures, collapsed and died in the Bahamas last week. Entertainment reporter Harvey Levin elaborated on the coverage of the tragedy. "Within a couple of hours after Jett's body was found," Levin lamented, "there were people on the radio saying this is proof that Scientology tells parents to withhold medication from their children. But I can tell you with certainty that John Travolta and Kelly Preston gave this young man a very powerful anti-seizure medication." The Factor complained that Jett's parents are being denied any privacy. "There will be all kinds of rumors and speculation, and I just think it's wrong to do this. People in the media should stop this insanity."

Best of body language from 2008
Tonya Reiman selected a few of the past year's most interesting body language displays, beginning with O.J. Simpson's tearful plea for leniency. "He's a broken man," Reiman declared. "You can see the forward lean, the shrugging of the shoulders. This was pitiful body language." Reiman next interpreted Barack Obama's body language when he entered the No Spin Zone. "He came into your intimate zone, which goes about eighteen inches. He went to touch your leg in a non-aggressive manner, which shows how strongly he feels and how dominating he wants to be." Finally, Reiman criticized Sarah Palin's multiple winks at the vice presidential debate. "She has such great body language, and then you get to the point where you can see that it's contrived. One wink is good, but this was too much."
Reality Check: Kathy Griffin's CNN explosion
As the fighting rages in Gaza, The Factor provided this Reality Check: "The far-left is mostly blaming the Israelis and the USA. The political scientist Roseanne Barr, for example, writes on her blog that 'Israel is a Nazi state.' Ms. Barr neglects to mention that Hamas has been trying to kill Israeli civilians for years. She should try to get a grip on reality." Meanwhile, comedienne Kathy Griffin spewed profanity while ringing in the new year on CNN. The Factor's check: "I could have used Ms. Griffin with the 'don't block the shot' guy up in New Hampshire." The Factor ended the segment with this check: "We'd like to thank all of you for making Fox News the dominant news channel in America. The Factor is the highest rated cable news program by a huge margin, and that's reality!"

Factor Words of the Day
Nelson Lum, San Francisco, CA: "Bill, thanks for rebroadcasting the Bob Hope segment. I missed him in Vietnam but was blessed later, as a police officer, with guarding him. What a great American hero!"

Claude Chupin, Houston, TX: "I was reminded that Bob gave the troops what they badly needed: Hope."

Dick McCallson, Huntington Beach, CA: "I didn't vote for him, but I am rooting for Barack Obama to succeed. He fails, we fail."

James Mulcahy, Bedford, TX: "Mr. O'Reilly, thank you for attacking people like me who support media reform. A smear from a pseudo-journalist like you is a high compliment."
