STORY EXCERPT
ABC News: Walmart Stores Inc., the nation's largest employer, is defending its sick leave policy after a workers' advocacy group issued a scathing report saying the company made it difficult for employees to take sick time for themselves and their children.

The report, issued this week by the National Labor Committee, criticizes Walmart for giving demerits to workers when they're out sick and making them pay for their first sick day with a personal day or vacation day, or not get paid.

Walmart told "Good Morning America" that company officials encourage employees to stay home if they or their children are sick, and sent a memo to "GMA" that will be issued to human resource managers at stores across the country saying, "We must be clear that no one will lose their job if they get H1N1."

It is my understanding that sick days are a "benefit" that is earned over a period of time for FULL TIME EMPLOYEES. The problem is, most, if not all, employees at WalMart are parttime. Moral of the story....Finish high school, get a vocation, and get a real job! WalMart is actually a great place to work, if you're looking for a parttime job.

When I go anywhere I use a paper towel to get into the bathroom and one to get out. Like john mb said so many people do not wash their hands and also cough into their hands.

Not to defend WalMart, but things have really changed. To name a few...

1.) Staffing has been cut back so far, stores cannot do without one less person.
2.) As mentioned previously, sick days often aren't used for when you're sick, it's a day to "call in."
3.) People are so strapped for cash, one can't afford to lost a day's pay.
4.) Attitudes have gotten to the point that, my needs outweigh the expectation of others to work in an environment where they won't get sick. Ever notice how many people don't wash their hands after going to the bathroom?
5.) Others.

I used to get 5 sick days a year and 10 vac days and both could roll over. Now we only get 4 sick days a year and they don't roll over and you can only roll over 5 days of vac into the next year. The option to cash in vac time was also cancelled. I am still way ahead of Walmart though!

I don't know the policy of Wal-Mart, but I know WAY too many people who DON'T stay home using sick days. They would much rather go to work sick and save those sick days for days they just don't WANT to go to work. Couldn't say why. If I were sick, I certainly wouldn't want to be working. I'd be staying home in bed. That's just me.

Sick days AND vacation days! A healthy and rested employee is a happy employee... You know the rest - Figure it out Wal-Mart.

Take a look at every business in America. Even the places with sick days. Often, sick days are hard to use. My last place of employment, employees have to use two full vacation days first. I had topped off on sick days, using the equivalent of maybe a week and a half in 19 years.
On top of that, most people I've worked with, men especially, won't call in sick; we might get sent home sick, but we won't do it in the first place.
